Going beyond incentives…

Studies have shown that incentives are less effective at changing behaviours that involve complex decision-making processes or require significant effort and time commitment.

A lot of incentive programmes in TDM are mostly rewarding the people who are already doing the behaviour and rewarding them for logging their sustainable transportation trips.

Incentives can have a role to play in mode shift, however they should be seen as the icing on the cake. The ‘cake’ needs to be an approach that has been designed from the beginning with proven behaviour change principles and techniques at the core.
